My Take On Cancel Culture…
Everything in life has its advantages and disadvantages. And I think that’s the reason why we have to go through ups and downs to be sure that we get to live an amazing lifestyle. We all have our gifts and talents. Some would realize their own time and remain consistent and dedicated to it over time, while some might find it difficult to set that pace for themselves.
When I first read the prompt topic “cancel culture”, all that was on my mind was about some cultures that have been canceled and run into extinction. But reading further I got to realize that it has a different meaning.
Cancel culture is all about the recent way of life we live now, the social media world where everyone gets to create content and gain engagement online. But when all of the support they need gets withdrawn, then it's termed as “cancel culture”.
I have a friend who experienced this and till today I never saw him come back active again. Maybe he might have concluded that social media space isn’t his way. And this was due to the shock he encountered after a while in the media.
He was interested in medicine. Though not a medical student. However, he had ideas of traditional medicine and some other research on advanced medicine. So putting all of this knowledge together he started creating content on his WhatsApp status. And gradually he began to gain a lot of positive feedback from his contacts.
After some time he thought of creating a TikTok and YouTube channel where he could advance and probably get to monetize his content too. He did this with so much dedication and commitment and then gradually got the audience he needed. He was so excited and he kept celebrating every milestone.
Not until one day when he woke to see his account banned. That was when he realized everything was over. I guessed he lost public support and some influencers have his account flagged and reported a scam. Maybe because he isn't a licensed doctor or medical personnel. He was so down, despite all the encouragement to create another account he just can't anymore.
Starting over might seem easy to the encourager, but the victim is the one who knows what they are going through. So this is one reason why I will go against the idea of cancel culture. It is just like getting to see all of your efforts getting drained right in front of you.
The advantage of it is that it might serve as a caution to those who upload abusive and related content. But the disadvantage here is more than the advantage of it.
Ruining people's careers, tarnishing their images, public shaming, and many more. We have some people whose only source of living is through media content, but once this gets backlashed the consequences might end up getting such people depressed, and some fragile-minded ones might even think of suicide.
This is my response to the HIVE LEARNERS weekly prompt in hive learners community for the Week 116 Edition 3 and the topic to be discussed is CANCEL CULTURE

Nowadays people dont care about abusing and the people who are mostly affected are especially those whose livelihood depends on online content creation. Rightly said. Nice post.
