Forgetfulness; An Act That Cost Me A Lot.
Humans are bound to forget; I am sure this is a part of what we call life. Assuming we are not forgetful in nature, then the world would be a war scene almost every second of our existence. Forgetfulness is what makes friends quarrel and get back together, it is what makes couples come together as one, and forgetfulness is what takes away time of pain and sorrow.
Our forgetfulness is what makes us live on despite the amount of loss we encounter. We lose our loved ones, we lose in business, and we encounter obstacles, but with time, we tend to forget about them.
Just yesterday I was a victim of forgetfulness but it didn’t cost much. It was just something I was able to correct with time. The nature of my job has been making me pay more attention to the little things and try to get accustomed to the habit of remembering rather than being forgetful.
While I was pumping water into the ponds, I had my mind on it and calculated the timing as to when the water would get filled up. I had to quickly attend to some stuff on my phone online. But unfortunately, it took away all of my attention. I forgot that I was even pumping water into the fish in the pond.
The moment I remembered I quickly rushed down to check and I met the water already overflowing, all the floor was filled with water and then I had wasted much of the time and water I should have used to fill up other ponds. What made my mind at ease was that they were bigger fish and could control themselves from flowing along with the water, if not I knew what I would have lost with that small mistake I made through forgetfulness.
A forgetful act that costs me.
I learned not to be forgetful most of the time not by nature but by trying to keep my brains organized on what to do next. It's just like having a to-do list in my head and I follow up with the next thing. I also try as much to be more focused and divert less of my attention to side talks and other distractions especially when I am at work.
There was a day when I stocked a pond with fish, then I opened the water inlet, water has been getting to a good level in the pond so I opened the outlet too. The water can keep going in and out serving the purpose of a water flow trough. At some point, my attention was needed elsewhere and then I left the pond with the mindset that I had done everything I needed to do.
After I was done, I didn’t check back to reconfirm maybe I locked the outlet or not. A few hours later I went to check it with the mind that the water level must have been high enough. When I got there I realized the water in the overhead supply tank was finished and then the outlet wasn't even locked.
All of the water was wasted and then when there was no supply of water anymore, the little oxygen in the pond couldn’t sustain the fish, so they dried off and died.
I was pained and regretful about the loss, but what has happened has happened, I couldn’t change anything. I tried to survive the little ones left alive and then reminded myself not to get swayed easily whenever I was at work. Lesson learned.
This is my response to the HIVE LEARNERS weekly prompt in the hive-learners community for the Week 168 Edition 1, and the topic to be discussed is SKIPPED MY MIND.
