The Problem With Online Movements And Why I Don't Join Them
I don't join online movements due to how toxic they are. It's a cycle. Something terrible will happen, and folks will rally around the topic on social media/ Boycotting problematic companies. There's one more thing.. assuming those who don't speak on said issue support the lousy side or think they're a terrible person. I hate the notion that someone is a bad person if they don't talk about serious issues. Maybe they're not experienced enough to speak on certain issues. Maybe they are doing the work in real life.
I believe harassment trains towards people who are unaware that Jimmy Johns is problematic (this is an example) or if they say the wrong thing, etc. Boyctting should be about taking a stand, not a purity test. When you harass people who don't talk about current events, it feels like a morality test than I'm doing a good deed.
