MONOMAD CHALLENGE: Miñe and the beam of light || Miñe y el rayo de luz
We already know that our cats like to bask in the sun in the mornings. It is one of the things that all cat trainers and those who study them recommend: to have spaces in the house where the sunlight enters naturally and directly in the spaces where they are. Fortunately, where we live there are several of them and of good quality, so Miñe has no problem finding them. However, this time I had a chance to create these photos and I had to make several adjustments to make it happen. Please let me tell you about it.
It was an ordinary morning and I was just finishing making breakfast. The sunlight was still fairly horizontal, and there were few clouds. So, I half-closed the front door to keep direct sunlight off a piece of furniture I had there. All normal.
But we know how cats decide to do things at their own time, seeming to care little about what we think. So she wanted to sunbathe. So she positioned herself millimetrically in the beam of light that the door opening allowed in. It was impressive the precision with which she did it. It seemed as if he had measured it with his own whiskers. It caused a lot of laughter, because it looked like she did it with some drama, you know, like she was being deprived of something and she had to beg for the leftovers.
But after the joke, I thought I could take some great pictures from the right angle. But it wouldn't be that easy. I had to find and set up my camera, and walk past her to stand in the doorway, and from there shoot the camera. And all that without her moving from there! Still, I decided to give it a try. I loaded the camera, and stayed still for a while. I went to the door and stood there for a few moments. Then I lay down at ground level and stood there without moving exaggeratedly while I set up the camera. And yes, Migne was still in the same place!
So I set up my camera the way I thought it would look good. I wanted a fast speed because I wanted a fairly dark outline, and so I would eliminate the elements in the background that I didn't want, because the sensor wouldn't give it time to pick up. That's why I used 1/250s. I closed the aperture a bit to gain some sharpness, so I set it at f/9. I didn't want a lot of noise, and since the light was direct and strong, ISO-200 was enough. I had to use a focal length of 55 mm since I didn't want to get any closer to it.
In the editing process it was clear to me that I would present them in black and white. And in fact, the original photos are almost in that format. There is barely a red color on a part of the floor and a few yellow hairs on Miñe's ears. But eliminating these details makes the photo even more interesting.

Looking at the result I feel quietness and peace. Maybe because I was very quiet and cautious to capture them, but also Miñe's posture is very good. You can see that she is calm, with her eyes barely open, completely ignoring me. It was her moment, at least that's what maybe she thought, and she didn't let the rest of us disturb that.

Ya sabemos que a nuestros gatos les gusta tomar sol en las mañanas. Es una de las cosas que todos los entrenadores de gatos y quienes los estudian recomiendan: tener espacios en la casa donde entre la luz del sol de manera natural y directa en los espacios donde ellos están. Afortunadamente, en el lugar donde vivimos hay varios de ellos y de calidad, así que Miñe no tiene problemas en hallarlos. Sin embargo, ésta vez tuve una oportunidad de crear éstas fotos y tuve que hacer varios ajustes para lograrlo. Por favor, deja que te lo cuente.
Era una mañana cualquiera y yo estaba terminando de hacer el desayuno. La luz del sol aún era bastante horizontal, y había pocas nubes. Así que entrejunté la puerta principal para que no le llegara la luz directa del sol a un mobiliario que tenía allí. Todo normal.
Pero ya sabemos cómo los gatos deciden hacer cosas a su propio momento, pareciéndole importar poco lo que pensamos. Así que ella quería tomar sol. De modo que se ubicó milimétricamente en el rayo de luz que la abertura de la puerta permitía entrar. Era impresionante la presición con lo que lo hizo. Parece que lo ubiese medido con sus propios bigotes. Nos causó mucha risa, porque parecía que lo había hecho con algo de drama, tu sabes, como si la estuviésen privando de algo y ella tenía que mendigar las sobras.
Pero luego del chiste, pensé en que podría hacer unas fotos geniales desde el ángulo correcto. Pero no sería tan fácil. Tenía que buscar y armar mi cámara, y pasar cerca de ella para ubicarme en la puerta, y desde allí disparar la cámara. ¡Y todo eso sin que ella se moviera de allí! Aún así, decidí intentarlo. Cargué la cámara, y me quede sin moverme un rato. Pasé a la puerta y me quedé parado allí unos instantes. Luego me acosté a nivel del suelo y me quedé allí sin moverme exageradamente mientras configuraba la cámara. ¡Y sí! ¡Miñe seguía en el mismo lugar!
Así que configuré mi cámara como pensé que quedaría bien. Quería una velocidad rápida porque quería un contorno bastante oscuro, y así eliminara los elementos en el fondo que no quería, porque el sensor no le daría tiempo de captar. Por eso usé 1/250s. Cerré un poco el diagragma para ganar un poco de nitidez, por eso lo ubiqué en f/9. No quería mucho ruido, y como la luz era directa y fuerte, con un ISO-200 fue suficiente. Tuve que usar una distancia focal de 55 mm en vista que no quería acercarme más a ella.
En el proceso de edición tenía claro que las presentaría en blanco y negro. Y en realidad, es que las fotos originales casi están en ese formato. Apenas hay un color rojo en una parte del suelo y unos pocos pelos amarillos de las orejas de Miñe. Pero eliminando eso detalles hacen aún más interesante la foto.

Al ver el resultado me transmiten quietud y paz. Tal vez porque fui muy callado y precavido para poder capturarlas, pero también la postura de Miñe es muy buena. Se ve que está tranquila, con sus ojos apenas abiertos ignorándome por completa. Era su momento, al menos es lo que quizás ella pensaba, y no dejó que los demás le perturbáramos eso.
